Ohana Arts Festival Youth Orchestra Auditions

Ohana Arts is seeking young musicians to join the Ohana Arts Festival Youth Orchestra in the inaugural Ohana Arts Fall Festival of Music opening night concert on Sunday, October 30th at 4:00 PM. Students ages 14-22 may audition live or send a link to a videotaped audition. Program for the concert includes Faure’s Requiem in D Minor and Cantique de Jean Racine, as well as Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin. Other performers include the Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus and the Hawaii Vocal Arts Ensemble. >>Audition information<<

Little Dorothy Gale of Kansas, like so many girls her age, dreams of what lies over the rainbow. One day a twister hits her farm and carries her away over the rainbow to another world. Come join Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tinman, the Cowardly Lion and Toto as they travel the universe of Dorothy’s imagination. Ohana Arts Summer Musical Theatre Workshop for students ages 8-18 presents this fully staged production of “The Wizard of Oz” on July 21, 22, and 23, 2011 at Roosevelt High School, 1120 Nehoa St., Honolulu, HI.

From the set of “The Wizard of Oz,” we set up interviews with some of the cast members, to see what they thought of the “Jitterbugs.” The Jitterbugs are creatures sent by the Wicked Witch of the West to make Dorothy and her friends so exhausted that they could not fight against the flying monkeys (winkies). Dorothy and her friends entered the Haunted Forest with a surprising welcome of the Jitterbugs. The cast members who we interviewed, told us what their first impression of the Jitterbugs were, and what they think of them now. Here are some of the interviews we took.

“Merry Old Land of Oz” Week 3

The primary focus of this week was Act 2, Scenes 1 through 6. In these scenes, Dorothy and her friends seek help from the Wizard because they each need something from him. Dorothy is searching for a way back home, Scarecrow is in dire need of a brain, Tinman longs for a heart, and Lion needs courage. When they get to the Emerald City, they are faced with another challenge, in order to obtain what they need, the Wizard is demanding that they first get the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West. But on the way to her castle, they go wander through a haunted forest where they encounter the Jitterbugs…To be continued…

This past Wednesday, June 22, we worked on the scene that focused on the Ozians in the Emerald City. In this video, the Ozians are welcoming Dorothy and her friends.
