Ohana Arts Festival and School invites students ages 8-18 to join us this summer for our popular summer session with world-class faculty and guest artists. This summer we offer a Musical Theatre Techniques Workshop, Musical Theatre Production Workshop, and a brand new Music Composer-Performer Workshop to be offered through the Hongwanji Mission School Summer School Sessions. Space is very limited, and enrollment is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

REGISTRATION INFO: Registration is administered through the Hongwanji Mission School Summer School. Registration Deadline for ALL programs is May 25th, 2012. Students completing grades 9-12 may apply for the tuition-free young artist fellowship program.  ALL students must also fill out the online audition form before May 25th in order to receive an audition time on June 2nd, 2012.

TUITION:
Half-Day Workshop (Music Composer-Performer, MTT, or MTP): $900
All-Day Musical Theatre Workshops (MTT and MTP): $1200 ($1315 with lunch)

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Students must be between the ages of 8 and 18 as of June 4th, 2012 for Musical Theater programs, and between the ages of 14-18 for the Music Composer-Performer Program. For the Music Composer-Performer program, students should be proficient on an instrument and must pass an entrance audition in order to receive registration confirmation. Students should be highly motivated, interested in the performing arts, and exhibit good behavior and attitude.

Admission Checklist:

  1. Submit Registration forms and tuition payment to the Hongwanji Mission School by May 25th (Exception: Students interested exclusively in the tuition-free fellowship program need to only submit a fellowship application to info@ohanaarts.org and attend the June 2nd auditions. Workshop registration for accepted fellows will occur after fellowships are announced).
  2. Submit online audition form by May 25th in order to receive an audition time for Saturday, June 2nd, 2012. Audition details and requirements are included online and in the Summer Viewbook (PDF)


TUITION-FREE YOUNG ARTIST FELLOWSHIPS:
The Ohana Arts Young Artist Fellowship program is open to students completing grades 9-12. Students who receive a fellowship will be given the opportunity to participate in any of the three Summer Workshops tuition-free if all admission requirements are met. Students are placed as assistants to various summer staff members, giving fellows the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in the following possible areas, depending on the interest and skill level: Marketing, Social Media, Stage Management, Dance Assistant, Arts Administration, and Public Relations, and Pit Orchestra Musician* (*Available parts for Oliver!: Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass, Flute/Piccolo, Oboe/English Horn, Clarinet/Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano/Keyboard, Percussion) . 2012 SUMMER WORKSHOPS:

NEW! MUSICAL THEATRE TECHNIQUES (MTT) WORKSHOP (Ages 8-18)
Mornings: 8:15 AM – 11:30 AM, M-F

This skills building workshop offers three sections (Elementary, Intermediate, and High School) of formal training in Vocal Performance, Acting, Dance (Ballet/Jazz), Ear Training/Music Theory, and an opportunity to sing in a show choir. Students will perform in an exciting final concert showcasing various solo and small group acts. The Musical Theatre Techniques (MTT) Workshop can be thought of as the “meat and potatoes” of Ohana Arts Musical Theater Training. Application Deadline: May 25th, 2012. Mandatory placement auditions will be held June 2nd, 2012. All students will take the following courses:

Voice Class
Ballet/Jazz Dance
Aural Skills/Show Choir
MTT & Musical Showcase Rehearsals
Open Mic/Coffeehouse

NEW! MUSIC COMPOSER-PERFORMER WORKSHOP (Ages 14-18)
Mornings: 8:15 AM – 11:30 AM, M-F

The Music Composer-Performer Workshop is geared for advanced young instrumentalists between the ages of 14-18 who would like to broaden their musicianship by learning to compose, improvise, and collaborate with other young artists. Students will work towards preparing a final project which will be performed live at Mamiya Theater on July 14th. **Students must pass an entrance audition to register for the Music Composer-Performer Workshop. Application Deadline: May 25th, 2012. Auditions will be held on June 2nd, 2012. Pre-recorded audition CDs or DVDs will also be accepted. MUSICAL THEATRE PRODUCTION WORKSHOP (Ages 8-18)
Afternoons: 1:00-4:30 PM, M-F (through July 22nd, 2012)

Students enrolled in the Musical Theatre Production Workshop will build strong performance skills through preparations leading towards a fully staged musical production of the beloved classic, Oliver! **Students enrolled in the Musical Theatre Techniques (MTT) Workshop (morning session) will have first priority in registering for the afternoon Musical Theatre Production Workshop. Students not enrolled in the morning MTT workshop will be admitted to the Musical Theatre Production Workshop based on audition and available space. Performances run through 7/22/12. Application Deadline: May 25th, 2012. Mandatory placement auditions will be held June 2nd, 2012.
